Central Consolidated School District launches Special Olympics

This spring, Central Consolidated School District is proud to release its schedule of its first Special Olympics for upcoming student-athletes. In collaboration with five schools in the four corners area, each school planned and will hold its event centered on our students with disabilities and have their fellow peers work with them on the sport of their choice.

Each school will begin their events with the signing on the #ChooseToInclude banner. This is a great place to cover stories since it will unite schools to support upcoming student-athletes by all signing the banner. If news outlets inform me that they will be available to cover any of these events, I can point reporters to district officials and coaches who have put together this program. We also have several students with badges or stickers permitting photographers and videographers to take their photos.

Here is the schedule of the events this spring.

March 20 - Tse Bit Ai Middle School Warriors will have a Kickoff event during both lunch periods.

March 21 – Shiprock High School #ChooseToInclude Banner signing during lunch. They will also have a spirit week.
This event would be a good idea to launch this story by capturing photos and interviewing students, coaches, and district officials. CCSD Public Relations can help identify these individuals.

March 22 - Kirtland Middle School soccer event. (rescheduled)

March 29 – Shiprock High School basketball game begins at 1 p.m.

April 6 – Tse Bit Ai Middle School will host a basketball game from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. (rescheduled)

April 14 - Kirtland Elementary School will host a Kickball event at 9 a.m.
This event would be a great story to cover because ALL students have their media release forms signed by parents. This release form allows photographers and media outlets to come and take pictures and videos of our students during this event.

April 21 – Kirtland Central High School #ChooseToInclude banner signing during both lunches.

May 5 – KCHS will host Bocce Ball at 8 a.m.

It is our hope that these schools will continue to hold more events in the future and possibly start competing with other schools in the district if they choose to do so.  We also hope other elementary, middle and high schools will participate in the 2023-2024 school year. It is an excellent opportunity to highlight our wonderful SPED students by motivating our communities to support our upcoming student-athletes in this year’s Special Olympics in CCSD.
