The Operations Department has been hard at work on removing old outdated heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units, and replacing them at Kirtland Elementary School since May of this year. The completion date for the project is November 16, 2018, which is currently running ahead of schedule.
When all the work is finished, the HVAC system can be controlled and monitored remotely through an automated digital device.
The renovations also include installation of new lighting and ceiling tiles in the cafeteria, lobbies, classrooms, and the library located on the west wing of the school building.
“These types of projects make our school buildings better learning environments for our students. That is our first priority and we are happy that this project will do that, as well as help us monitor its efficiency from anywhere,” said Candice Thompson, CCSD director of operations.
The Kirtland Elementary project is part of the Central Consolidated School District (CCSD) long-range facility vision within the five-year master plan 2016-2021, which guides CCSD projects/construction schedules, once the state approves the plan and funding is allocated. We are currently in the 3rd year of the five-year master plan, which has included HVAC projects at Shiprock High School and Kirtland High School, both completed in 2017.
“Let’s remember also that these new systems not only help us conserve energy, which saves us money but that they are environmentally friendly as well,” said Thompson.
The priority process of the master plan includes a variety of completed projects: preventive maintenance (filter changes, boiler and playground inspections), security upgrades (cameras and door entry systems), natatorium renovation, and ongoing projects like access to appropriate technology, replacing and repairing asphalt, and maximizing building square footage use.
The cost of the current project at Kirtland Elementary is expected to be 3.2 million – 1.9 million comes from state funds, and the rest a combination of bond-funding and PSFA-funding (Public School Facilities Authority).
